I’ve been a barista for ~10 years. Finally decided to splurge on a home machine with small footprint because we don’t have alot of counterspace.1. Your coffee type/grind will be the ultimate factor in how well it pulls and how much you tamp in. Even using Cafe Bustelo I got so much crema it looked like a latte. If you dont fill it to full when tamped (leaving just enough space for the brewhead to nestle in the portafilter) it’s going to be watery and lame. I dont have a properly portioned scoop yet, just eyeball it (experience). I’ve seen alot of complaints about this and it’s 1000% user error or… maybe they did have a faulty machine. Who knows.2. Get a 30lb spring press tamper that adjusts the depth level for you if you can’t tamp level and consistent. I got one cuz I’m lazy and too tired to care when I wake up thanks to baby, also for teaching my fiance how to do it. Makes it idiot proof.3. How do you know you filled it enough with espresso? Put your tamp in, spin it. If the grinds are leveled out and fairly compact, you have enough. If loose or has gaps in the surface, you need more before you press. When your done brewing, if your puck isnt equally wettish dry throughout, you didn’t fill/tamp right or your grind is too big/wrong for this machine. We personally like Lavazza Coffee, works well every time.Make about 6-10 shots/day, going strong for about half a year now.Pros:-smaller than a Kitchenaid by ALOT. I thought they’d be similar in size. I was pleasantly surprised to find out its even smaller (again not alot of counterspace).-water tank can be removed off the back just by lifting and easy to clean. Easy refill as well.-easy auto off if you forget to push the button before walking away because you’re a zombie.-can kinda make a small hot cup of tea quick by pouring hot water out the steamwand spout. We haven’t really used it to steam milk cuz we like iced coffee more.-can get alot of crema depending on how good you are at making espressoCons:-hot plate on top is just a mildly warm plate. Maybe if you use the steamwand it would get hotter.-kinda loud the first 20 uses then mellows out a bit. The pump needs to get primed and working. It does vibrate alot though. Also louder when using the steamwand.-getting the portahandle in the machine the first like 20 times is hard as well, until the seal breaks in to it.-it is shiny plastic for the most part on the outside, not metal and makes it feel flimsy when you’re breaking in the seal trying to get that portahandle to lock in right.-overall height under spout makes it hard to brew into alot of mugs with. I don’t like using shot glasses and wasting my crema when I can brew right into my mug/cup!-instructions say to brew espresso first them steam your milk because you have to wait a few minutes for cool down so you don’t kill the machine with overheating; espresso burns after 10 seconds without a temperature drop or adding [milk] fat/dilution to it. Partially why i don’t use this at all, by the time your machine cools down your milk will be fairly cooled as well to brew espresso second (what you should do). The only way around this would be adding *some* cold milk to your espresso when you brew before steaming the rest. Or an ice cube or two.-as far as I can tell you can’t backflush clean your brewspout? Which gives me an ick. Run a shot of hot water through after each use to be safe.

So I bought this espresso machine on Amazon 3 years and 5 months ago. It was my first serious espresso machine. I have a stovetop espresso maker (bialetti one) and had kurig machines, but just wanted better coffee (lattes) in the morning – since buying this, I have used it EVERY single day. Some days I’ve made more than one latte, so we are talking over 1400 shots of espresso… then just the other day an electric connector inside literally burnt up and melted- it smelled and started smoking so I popped the lid off to take a look- and the connectors that were white melted and were blackened and probably one more use and I would have been dealing with an electric fire. See my pic!For those 3.5 years though, I loved this machine. It’s has been reliable, easy to use, consistent to brew with, super easy to keep clean and to descale, and I’ve only ever brewed with bottled water- no tap water has ever gone through this machine because I was afraid of all the mineral scale in our water destroying it.Now, for a well know brand that is also sold at major kitchen store retailers like Williams Sonoma, I felt confident I was getting a good product. I am a bit displeased it only lasted 3.5 years though… I’ve had the same insignia 42” flat screen for over 10 years… why some electronics/consumer products last seemingly forever (well past when your wanting to upgrade- in the case of myTV), others just do not. Now I’d love that TV to kick the bucket so I can upgrade… but I’m a bit disappointed this De’Longhi espresso machine died so soon. I checked for parts and the electric connector part was discontinued so it doesn’t seem like I can repair it, though what caused the electrical connector to burn up probably also needs replacing… what should be $40 in parts I can’t get. The ability to repair De’Longhi products was initially a selling point- but with parts being discontinued it’s not exactly the selling point it was made out to be. Luckily, I contacted the manufacturer and they indicated they would replace it with a refurbished one. Pretty impressed they would do that. Maybe yours won’t die as soon as mine, maybe you think 3.5 years is acceptable product life and don’t mind. Personally- trying a cheaper brand next time I need to purchase a new one, but probably going to regret it lol.

This machine has been used multiple times a day over the past 5 years and it is still brewing a great shot of espresso. This machine is easy to use, very beginner friendly. If you are looking for a good espresso machine that won’t break the bank and is easy to use, this is for you.

Horrible setup instructionsFirst off I’m a dual qualified engineer. Systems engineering and communications and guidance engineer, so I’m no dummy. But the instructions for setup, adjust temp specifically suck! They do not match the actually procedure, but once I figured it out (experiential intuition helps) it’s not difficult to run. In addition, DON’T OVERFILL THE FILTER BASKET! If the filter will not insert and rotate to lock, you likely have to much coffee in the basket. They should have a clearer marking. I think the baskets should have been a little deeper for both the one and two cups. You can’t make it strong enough. Coffee does not come out hot enough even at the highest setting (at best that I can tell, is where I have it set). You cannot make a double Americano, because to make even a small cup of Americano you will need to use the 2 cup basket. So the dual drip for two shots is pretty much useless. I literally just received the unit, set it up and tried a few experiments for the first time, so I’ll play with it a bit, but if I don’t get any better at it, it’ll go back. So far, I’m a little disappointed in De’ Longhi, especially since they are Italian … you’d think they’d be a little fussier about their espresso machines at ANY level.Think I’m close to mastering this thing. The scoop that comes with the tamper sucks, use a regular tsp. For a 2 cup, loosely fill the basket to the top edge with a fine grind (not superfine). Lightly tamper do not over tamper. If you take the filter off after making your espresso and its “soupy” then you likely over tampered and the water is not flowing properly and you won’t get a decent creme. When you lightly temper and clean the edges you should end up with about 1/8th of an inch of space at the top of the basket. If you heater is like mine, it needs to be at the hottest setting. When you master this you should have about 30% or better creme at the top of your cup and it should take a few minutes not seconds to disappear. As well, instead of soup in the basket you should end up with a puck that basically falls out.Update after the first week of use. Once we all started to master the technique of using this machine, we all have come to the conclusion (4 of us) that you can make a nice smooth velvety espresso and a really nice Americano. The trick as noted about is to A) not over grind your coffee. Fine but not Superfine!! and B) do not overfill the basket. We mostly make double cups and such its basically 2 heaping tsp of fine Starbucks espresso (that’s what we use). When you level that with your finger or a flat edge it should b just about or very close to level across the top of the filter. Then firmly tamper making sure the coffee is level and you don’t have valleys. The resulting space from coffee to top of the filter should be about 1/8″ – 3/16″. With the right grind as noted that should give you a really nice smooth espresso with a luxurious creme.

Works perfectly, easy to use but noisy for small spacesThe quality of the espresso shots is really good, and I especially appreciate the adjustable milk frothing wand that produces good cappuccinos. However, the machine does make a bit of noise when brewing the espresso. Despite the noise, the machine continues to work well and has become a daily essential for my coffee routine!
