10 reviews for De’Longhi EC885M Dedica Arte Espresso Machine,35 Fluid Ounces

Update:I ordered some accessories from DeLonghi, including their “signature” ground espresso blend so I could get a better sense of their idea of a perfect shot. I also experimented with non-dairy milks (also A2 milk which was gross btw). I’m now using Califia Almond “Barista Blend” with a drop of Pacific Foods hemp milk for added body.Once my accessories arrived, my drink quality dialed up. The small steaming carafe is the perfect size for my single cappuccino. I didn’t know they came that small!Full disclosure: prior to having a proper steaming carafe, I’d been using a small cup from my Japanese tea set to steam milk in (i know…) Anyway, I’m using slightly more milk now but it’s totally worth it.I’m still perfecting my espresso shot: The signature ground tends me an over-extracted shot (I have found I can mitigate by using slightly less).Today, I went back to ESE pod and it wasn’t half bad—I don’t know if it’s just that I can see the thin line of crema better in my new glass cups or what, but at any rate, it’s certainly as good a result as I was getting with ESE pods in my previous machine.I still find the steam function to be a bit finicky: The unit often switches from steam back to cooling for a shot before I’m ready. The steam pressure and output also seems highly variable. That said, after two weeks of adjusting to the new machine, I’ve finally achieved the desired result (see photo) and have decided to keep it.TLDR;Decent machine for a frothy espresso drink but be sure to buy a proper steaming carafe!~~~~~~~~^^UPDATED ^^~~~~~~~~~~~I promise to update this review as I tweak my espresso game but, so far, not so good!! This was an “upgrade” from my previous DeLonghi EC155 15 Bar Espresso and Cappuccino Machine which is a surprisingly good little machine for the money (I probably could have kept that one going with a proper descaling but I reckon it served me up at least 1000 macchiatos so I’d got my money’s worth.) I was tired of wiping the leaking water off the counter with that model, plus I thought it would be healthier to have a stainless steel portafilter vs aluminum.Anyway, woke up this morning with high expectations of a smooth, flavorful cappuccino which were quickly dashed…Background: I used to order and grind my own beans (Kona) but have simplified my life in recent years and have been using ESE pods (after a brief stint with Illy capsules). This unit comes with a special pod filter which is super neato but so far (3 tries) I’m getting watery under extracted shots. I’ve tried two different ESE pod brands so far this morning. The bigger disappointment for me compared to my previous model is the steam function: I am allergic to dairy. I also prefer macchiato to latte (that’s what turned me off from buying the Breville Bambino Plus because the minimal milk required is way more than I want or need). The afore mentioned De’Longhi gave me perfect control over steaming about 1.5 ounces of Pacific Brands Original Almond Milk in a small cup. The Dedica only has one steam setting (on or off) and doesn’t allow me to adjust the steam pressure like the old model did. So, foamless and watery shots is all I got today :(I’m thinking I’ll be forced to buy another grinder and start learning how to dose my own shot which is a project I really wasn’t trying to sign up for right now. On top of that, now I’ll have to experiment to find a new milk (maybe I’ll go back to hemp milk or see how far I’d have to drive for some A2 milk around here). Also, another review mentioned the “bear hug” to lock and unlock the portafilter: that is real: I already learned to make sure the unit is off while locking the portafilter in place to avoid inadvertently pushing the brew button. On the plus side, it looks really pretty and has a much more quality/professional look on my counter as compared to the cheaper model. (I already foresee a lot more polishing and wiping to keep that stainless spotless).

UPDATE: 12/24/22: Well, this machine is a whole 2weeks old… & is now leaking from both the water reservoir all over my counter, as well as, spewing/dripping water from the portafilter straight into my morning cappuccino cup!!I can’t tell you how disappointed I am…not only in this machine & the time Ive invested in it, but with the Delonghi name itself, especially, given the reviews! My 1st machine had a faulty frother right out of the box.. I used to feel that Delonghi was a “trusted” name of quality.. but not after this. It seems, IF you are “lucky enough” to get a solid machine that functions as it should, then, you will probably have a very pleasant experience. Otherwise, its returns & headaches. It is a shame because I really did love the machine. But, as for me, I’m choosing NOT to go for machine #3 with Delonghi! I’ll be returning this and replacing it with a different brand. Sadly, I will rethink making any further Delonghi purchases.I’ve only had this Delonghi Dedica 885 for going on 2 weeks… and yes, as others have said, there is a learning curve. I’m just now pulling/making pretty good espresso & cappuccinos. But.. it IS worth the time invested…My Tip, is for the Brand New Delonghi owners who are struggling with a portafilter that is impossibly hard/tight to move & close!! This is my 2nd Delonghi Dedica 885; the 1st one had a faulty frother. But both, when new, had portafilters that were exceptionally tight!!! My 2nd machine was SOO hard, I thought for sure there had to be a misalignment & I was going to have to return a 2nd machine. Even my 6.2ft, 240lb fiancé said it was “ridiculously tight.” Soo, because I totally dreaded yet another exchange, I decided to try something before boxing it all up.. as a last ditch effort… I put a TINY bit of EVOO on my pinky…I mean like *a drop* … and lightly rubbed it only around the very top rim and the 3 “ears” of the portafilter. After it was a little “slick” from the oil, I rinsed the portafilter under cool water to rinse off any excess oil & then blotted it dry with a paper towel.. and Voila!!! It was still slightly stiff.. but NOTHING like when initially trying to turn/close it!! Initially, I could only turn my portafilter handle about an inch or a little more..then, forget it!!! BUT, after the oil and a few more “open & closes”… Perfecto, No more “bear-hugging” the machine fighting my portafilter trying to get it in place!!Just remember, in this case, less IS more.. you can always add another *drop* if you must, but be conservative, being it is crucial the portafilter is 100% secure/locked in place before any brewing…This saved me from an additional exchange & possibly the same struggle with another machine, so hopefully, I can save others the frustration. And remember, cut yourself some slack in the beginning, especially, if you’re new to espresso &/or machines. You tube can be very helpful to aid in initial setup, as well as general guidance and tips if needed… So, hang in there because it really IS worth it!

Its a good option but there should be another better option out there.

Almost as shown. I already have a great tamper from my last Delonghi use. So, I gave the tamper to a friend. Better than nothing. But I got it on sale. If I paid full price I would have complained. No professional tamper. But I’ve had nearly a month and it’s been fantastic. I love that it stops at a measured amount of water. Consistent. My last one didn’t have that feature. I don’t know how many times I had to step away. Only to have to start over. I have a scoop exactly the right size for the machine. It’s not clogging on me. And if I forget to shut off on side I merely push on of the buttons for brewing and it pops back up. I love it and hope to have it for years to come.

Pros – reliable, easy to operate, quick to heat up, consistent shotsCons – portafilter is not a standard size so limited customization, basket pops out of portafilter with every use

This machine is easy to operate, it takes some experimentation to find the right grind and you need a good conical grinder with a setpoint to consistently get a good fine grind because there is no built in grinder but then you have a good espresso or a good cappucino. The machine has setpoints for the temperature and quantity of water so you can make any kind of coffee, only for an Americano you have to add some more hot water. Excellent machine, easy to clean. The plateau is a bit small for two cups, though.

A wonderful little machine!I really love this espresso machine. It’s nice and compact, not taking too much room on my counter. The espresso it produces is quite nice, although my old Breville Cafe Roma gave better creme. I will continue to try different beans and grind sizes to get better creme. The portafilter is tight to engage at first, but I think mine is breaking in now, so it is a little easier. People have complained about it being tippy because it is so light, when engaging the portafilter, but some trial and error and I figured out the best way to hold it is on the machine just above where you put the portafilter in when you twist it.After some practice I have worked out how to get nice foam for my lattes. I’m really happy with it. The machine isn’t overly loud. The steaming for lattes is much quieter than my old Cafe Roma which sounded like dying banshees. I don’t feel so guilty about using it when other members of the family are sleeping in the morning. People complaining about it not producing froth should watch some Youtube videos and keep trying. You will get it, and the froth will happen. Now I just have to figure out how to make art. Despite the lack of art on my lattes they still taste awesome, and the texture is really nice as well. Another thing Is full fat milk makes nicer froth, and add your syrups to your cup and not the milk.An americano has become part of my morning routine. I like to put the hot water in my cup first and pull the espresso shot on top. It leaves the creme more intact. Speaking of straight into the cup, it is nice to be able to remove the catch tray and fit a regular sized cup under the portafilter, so no need to transfer espresso shots to other cups. The baskets that comes with it comes apart for cleaning. I didn’t see how often it is recommended that you take apart the baskets, but I would recommend once a day. I read other reviews that say after a few uses that their machines wouldn’t pull a shot. I had this same issue, but I noticed that when I took apart the basket, it had dried espresso covering the little hole. Since then, I take it apart after I use it and either rinse or wash it off. I use a spoon to grip the little rubber tab to help it pull apart easier.I found that the double shot was too small, only about an ounce of fluid and I read it should be 2 ounces. I was able to easily program the machine to pull a longer shot.I really do love this machine and recommend it to those looking for an affordable espresso machine. Apparently you can buy a bottomless portafilter to upgrade and fine tune your espresso experience. I may one day do this.Edit to add that I tried grinding my beans slightly finer ans now have better creme. The Ethical Beans, Sweet Espresso are delicious and so smooth tasting.

  10. The “Flying Kiwi”.

Really surprised! Considerably better than the Breville Infuser. For about 5 years I’d been using the expensive Breville Infuser (pictured) and getting “OK” coffee. Over the years the Infuser had lots of issues and I repaired it multiple times. Recently it produced an earth leakage fault so decided it was time to replace it & bought the De’Longhi EC885M. Sadly the 1st one arrived faulty – it would only pump water out the bottom onto the counter top – however Amazon promptly sent me another to replace it.I am pleasantly surprised to find the coffee from this cheaper unit is way better than the Infuser ever was. It is definitely feels more more cheaply made but it simply does what its meant to without fuss and bother. It came with a tamper of some weight which works well. You can remove the plastic tray at the bottom so larger cups / mugs fit OK. (see photo#2)The Steam Wand is a little awkward, it doesn’t move quite as far up as desired but it is still fit for purpose. (See photo #3).Typically I would have eight (or so) triple shot coffees a day with the Breville, but curiously finding the taste of the coffee the De’Longhi makes is so rich and full I don’t need that many and am down to five or six a day. Currently using the Cafe William Corposo beans ground quite fine and getting a nice crema with the double filter in the Sump. (The sump is deeper than the Breville Infuser was also). The coffee from this is richer and fuller tasting than the infuser ever managed. So for the price I am a huge fan. Consistently good coffee at a reasonable price.
